Joel Sternfeld's influential and often surreal studies of American people and landscapes have won him this year's prestigious $36,000 Citigroup Photography Prize. Paul Wombell, who chaired the Citigroup jury, says a major factor in the decision was Sternfeld's seminal series American Prospects: "The work is 25 years old yet it's still so fresh it looks like it could have been made yesterday. Sternfeld was in London last week to accept the award.
